Frequently Asked Questions About CELPIP

For Express Entry, you need minimum CLB 7 (CELPIP 7) in all four sections. However, CLB 9 (CELPIP 9) in all sections gives maximum CRS points (136 points for language). Each CLB level from 7 to 9 adds 11 points per skill, totaling 44 additional points - which can significantly improve your ranking.

The CELPIP-General test takes approximately 3 hours: Listening (47-55 min), Reading (55-60 min), Writing (53 min), Speaking (15-20 min). The entire test is computer-based and completed in a single sitting without breaks between sections.

CELPIP-General tests all 4 sections (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking) and is required for Express Entry and permanent residency. CELPIP-General LS tests only Listening and Speaking - it's accepted for Canadian citizenship applications, which require only CLB 4 in these two skills.

CELPIP uses a 1-12 scoring scale that directly corresponds to Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) levels. Each section receives a separate score - no overall composite score is provided. Unlike IELTS, CELPIP uses whole numbers only (no 7.5 or similar half-scores). Level M (minimal) is below 1.

CELPIP results are available online within 3-4 business days after your test date through your CELPIP account. You can send scores directly to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). CELPIP scores are valid for 2 years from the date your score report is issued.

Difficulty is subjective and depends on your strengths. CELPIP advantages: 100% computer-based (no human examiner nerves), North American accents only, Canadian content/context. IELTS advantages: More familiar globally, face-to-face speaking may suit some candidates. Choose based on your comfort with computer testing and accent familiarity.

There is no limit to how many times you can take CELPIP. You can retake the test as soon as test dates are available. However, unlike TOEFL's MyBest Scores, CELPIP does not combine scores from multiple test dates - you must use scores from a single test sitting.
